Bob Seger - Greatest Hits Review
Bob Seger has racked up a lot of worthy tracks over the years, but it took until 1994 for a greatest hits package to appear. Voilà. The bad news: We're missing an awful lot of songs here. Night Moves is Seger's crit-pick album, and a great place to start if you don't have any Seger at all. Next in the rankings is Stranger in Town. Otherwise, his highs are pretty scattered, which would make any best-of package a worthy investment. But if you want to get comprehensive, "Rock & Roll Never Forgets," "Fire Down Below," "Horizontal Bop," "Her Strut," "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight," and "Katmandu" aren't on this CD--and you'll have to go to the original albums to secure them. --Gavin McNett

Elevator music from a once-great rocker

Bob Seger produced some of the greatest rock and roll to come out of the Detroit area- songs like "Persecution Smith", "East Side Story", and one of the first, if not *the* first anti-War song of that era, "2+2". Unfortunately none of these are on this disc. Instead, what you get is songs from later in his career, after he discovered that vapid MOR ballads sold better than rock and roll. His gain, and our loss.

This is one of those CD's that has many songs you hear on classic rock radio stations but you might not have realized who sang them. Bob Seger's music is straight from blue collar middle America a la John Mellancamp. His songs are catchy and simple and this CD is a pretty complete collection of his best stuff (Beautifull Loser is the most notable exception.) Even the most casual music fan will recognize Old Time Rock and Roll from various media outlets. Also well known is the slower and kind of boring Like A Rock, which for good reason hasn't seen as much radio play as other songs on this disc. I think the underated gem is the touching ballad titled We've Got Tonight. This song I first remeber seeing on a particularly excellent episode of The Wonder Years, a show notorious for using great music.

This is an uneven album as some of the songs aren't very imaginitve and somewhat repetetive.

Bottom Line: A decent compilation album. Casual fans of Seger can pick this up cheap and have the essentials. Hardcore fans will probably avoid this.
