Beausoleil - Looking Back Tomorrow Beausoleil Live
Looking Back Tomorrow Beausoleil Live Review
Not only are Beausoleil the band that introduced traditional Cajun music to the world outside of their native Louisiana, they are probably one of the best live acts anywhere. Looking Back Tomorrow is a recording that captures them in their element, playing in front of an enthusiastic audience. Led by Michael Doucet's driving fiddle and powerful vocals, Beausoleil deliver a delightful set of 15 songs, including the irresistible call to dance "J'ai Été au Bal," the haunting Dennis McGee song "Pa Janvier," and "Amédé," Doucet's tribute to the great accordionist Amédé Ardoin. The sound quality of the CD is excellent, and you can hear every nuance of the concert, from the way accordionist Jimmy Breaux and Doucet trade phrases, to the subtle interplay of the various instruments of the rhythm section. Looking Back Tomorrow is an excellent introduction to Beausoleil for someone who has never heard the band, and a fine collection of live versions of some of their best songs for those who already know and love them. --Michael Simmons

I've seen Beausoleil several times and while their studio work is great they're one of those bands, like Los Lobos, that really is better live than in the studio. Beausoleil's big break came at Wolf Trap, so it's approprirate to celebrate their anniversary by recording a live show there. This is actually a compilation put together from two nights and while it's five-star material, I really wish they'd picked one of the nights and made this a double (or triple) CD. The Doucet brothers and company have set the standard for Cajun music -- and have kept that standard high year after year. (Yeah, I know, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys come close, but Beausoleil still reign supreme!) Put on this single disc (man, I wish there had been two!) and crank up your CD player. I can't speak a word of French or Cajun/French, but it doesn't matter. The infectious grooves of Beausoleil will grab you, get you up and out of your seat and shaking that booty. (If you're home with a significant other, I'm sure they'll dance with you. If you home alone, go for it -- but make sure the curtains are drawn!!!) Seriously, this is great, great music and like I said the only fault I have with any of it is that there just isn't enough. Yeah, it clocks in at over an hour, but 2 to 2-1/2 hours would have been even better! Mmmmmm. I don't get better than this, y'all.
