Aqua - Aquarium
Aquarium Review
Danish group Aqua arrived on the international pop scene in 1997 with their multimillion-selling smash single "Barbie Girl." Developing a formula pioneered by their successful Swedish rivals Ace of Base and Whigfield, the band demonstrated on this album that they were more than just one-hit wonders (at least in markets outside America). Skillfully crafted for instant, easily digestible consumption, Aquarium is equally entertaining at the club or at home. It's jammed full of bubblegum pop classics, ranging from the Eurodisco opening track "Happy Girls & Boys" to the Madonna-esque ballad "Turn Back Time." A treat for all pop lovers, it is an album that will both entertain and surprise. --John Galilee

bubblegum but guilty pleasure

europop was a big craze in the 90's and since the music industry was catering to kids to buy albums from spice girls, hanson and other teeny boppers, aqua did the same by making cutesy lyrics and funky videos accompanied by europop beats. The formula worked and it was an occasional fun thing to play and poke fun at but in all honesty, I was mostly listening to Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey and Mary J Blige when all of this was going on.

Some songs are fun.

I am actually ashamed to have this CD in my collection, and it's, most likely, the most embarrassing CD on my shelf. Despite being ashamed and shocked, I have to admit, there's some good songs. Happy Boys And Girls is a fun song to listen to, My Oh My is another good song, Doctor Jones is a favourite of mine, Lollipop (Candyman) is probably the best song, Roses Are Red is a little cheesy though fantastic, whereas Turn Back Time sees Aqua being really mature. The other songs are either mediocre or not so good. Barbie Girl is a little fun, you have to admit, but nothing to scream over. (Check out the Perky Park Mix, though.) Good Morning Sunshine is incredibly herendous, Be A Man is OK, to be honest with you, and the rest of the songs aren't too good. Overall, all I gotta say is, remember that Irish girl band called B*Witched? Their albums are much better. Futhermore, go listen to The Backstreet Boys. Three stars.

Come on, everyone has to have a couple of CDs that someday their kids make fun of them for. This is certainly one of them. But its just so much fun to listen to! Its great for that slow lethargic day that you just get can't get moving. Its silly, yes, but a little silliness never hurt anyone.

When that day comes that I have a kid who makes fun of me for owning this CD, I'll just smile and start singing I'm a Barbie Girl...
