SHOULD BE A 6 STAR RATING

This is one of the best redone classic rock cd's around! If you are a Who fan, get this one instead of hte less expensive remastered version. This one has a whole extra disc of out-takes and demo recordings that includes Pete doing vocals on some songs that Roger sings on original. It has a great bit with John, Keith and Pete talking and Keith laughing hysterically- it is WELL WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY!!!!!

This album is SO GOOD.

I don't know TOMMY at all, and this is my first WHO album. Listening from this vantage, I now understand why it was turned into a major Bway musical. The performance captured on this recording is dramatic, intensely musical, and intelligent.

In terms of sound, listening only to the 2channel SACD layer, the drums sound incredibly lifelike. The piano has a wonderful live sound, and the guitars and bass sound very crisp and succinct. The vocals are very nice and clear. I like the close-up sound, since it lets you really hear the musicianship, and the mixing creates a nice balance so everything has space around it. I couldn't really tell that this is a 25 year old recording at all. The sound is as good as, and in some places better, than the Rolling Stones SACDs.

I'm impressed and loving the music. I only wish Goodbye Yellow Brick road sounded like this.

While I'm not immediately appreciative of the 2nd disk with alternate material, there is a wealth of different versions of songs, and in some cases, I like the alternates better. It's great to hear the variations. These are also all in excellent sound, and there's a jam session that almost sounds like you're there.

I can easily put this album into the "must-have" category.

Anyone for Moon?

The only complaint I've ever had about "Tommy" was that Keith Moon's drumming seemed a bit lost in the final mix. Don't get me wrong, it's one of my favorite albums/CDs of all time. I just think that with a drummer like Moonie, well, you should flaunt him a bit more on a CD like this.

The only thing I could think is that Pete Townshend thought the same thing some 35 years later and remixed this multi-channel SACD with every single drum beat brought to the front of the sound experience in crystal clarity. I could go on about the overall sound quality which is about the most impressive I've ever heard, but if you're a Keith Moon fanatic like myself, this mix is reason enough to get an SACD player and BUY THIS CD!
