The Premiere Collection: The Best Of Andrew Lloyd Webber (Original Cast Compilation) Review
There are many, many Andrew Lloyd Webber albums out there, including cut-and-paste compilations and songbooks from individual artists, most notably Sarah Brightman, Michael Crawford, and even Jose Carreras. The Premiere Collection is probably as authentic as you can get in a hits album, however. In addition to the most popular selections from the original casts of Evita, Cats, and Jesus Christ Superstar, the 57-minute album includes two selections from Tell Me on a Sunday (also recorded by Bernadette Peters as Song and Dance), the title tune from Starlight Express, the "Pie Jesu" from the Requiem, and a snippet from the Paganini Variations, thereby allowing you to hear the good stuff without having to spring for the complete albums. Note that the three selections from Phantom of the Opera are the 1986 pop singles instead of the cast recordings, meaning Steve Harley rather than Crawford sings with Brightman on the title tune and Cliff Richard subs for Steve Barton on "All I Ask of You." (Crawford does sing "The Music of the Night," of course.) This 1989 compilation was too early for Aspects of Love or Sunset Boulevard, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is ignored, but these omissions are rectified in the follow-up album The Premiere Collection Encore, and the American-slanted version, The Very Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Broadway Collection. --David Horiuchi

Bottom Line: Good Music

To my suprise I became fan of the music. Webber's brilliant music sung by great vocalists like Crawford, Harley, Yvonne, Webb, Richard, and Brightman is an absolute treat. Brightman and Richard's, "All I ask from you" is as good as any duet gets. I am not a broadway fan, and I find the whole scene "weird", but this CD is really good.

This has got to be the Best Andrew Lloyd Weber compilation album out there. It's more original then the others, for the famed musical "Phantom of the Opera" we finally get a break from the typical cast which gets tiring...and get more of a pop feel with "The Phantom of the Opera", and The guitars just make it sound cool! And not to mention of course a new singer for "All I Ask of You." (A good break for those fans who have the Original London Cast Recording) The true masterpieces of this CD are: "The Phantom of the Opera", "Superstar", "Memory" (From the Best Grizabella Ever, Elaine Paige), "Starlight Express", "Tell Me On A Sunday", "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" (Thankfully we get two different singers with this one and "Don't Cry for me Argentina"), "I Don't Know How To Love Him" and the conluding Latin-sung "Pie Jesu" with Sarah Brightman...which is simply Beautiful! Well, all of these are Simply beautiful and this really is a Must Buy for any Andrew Lloyd Weber or Modern-day Broadway fan. I got this for my sister six or seven years ago and I still listen to it all the way thru to this very day! Just goes to show how monumental Weber was in the Modern Day world of Broadway and we will always remember his musicals as some of the best in Broadway. Definatly Reccomended! I give this CD an A++!

This cd was given to me as a gift after I had first seen the magnificent Phantom of the Opera when I was twelve or so. Upon receiving it and playing it for the first time, I was hooked. The haunting change of lyrics in the romantic rock version of Phantom of the Opera, the pure, thrilling fear of a woman being cheated on in Take That Look Off Your Face, the chilling poignance of "Memory".... I love it all... This cd is brilliant - one of his best!
