The Most Famous Opera Duets Review
This is a misnomer--not all of these duets are all that famous--but it's a fine compilation nonetheless. You'll hear selections from Bizet's The Pearl Fishers (Nicolai Gedda and Ernest Blanc at their most elegant French), Madama Butterfly (Carlo Bergonzi and Renata Scotto--an impassioned pair), Lucia di Lammermoor (a classy Alfredo Kraus and Edita Gruberova), the lovely Lakme duet, The Presentation of the Silver Rose from Der Rosenkavalier (with the earnest Christa Ludwig and the other-worldly Teresa Stich-Randall), and a fine Trovatore "Miserere" (with Leontyne Price and Franco Bonisolli singing up a storm). There are many others, too--a veritable cornucopia of couplings--and a treat for the opera lover. --Robert Levine

This is a wonderful compilation CD of some of opera's most beautiful duets. I particularly enjoyed the duet from Der Rosenkavalier with Christa Ludwig and Teresa Stich-Randall and the Wagner Duet with Jon Vickers and Helga Dernesh (sp?). This is a great CD to just plug in the stereo and listen to while you're working.

I have grown to love this CD. The mix of duets is superb. The singers are so well matched and give effortless performances. Some are well known and others not but the results together are incredibly beautiful. I can't imagine hearing a Tristan and Isolde any better than Jon Vickers and Helga Dernesch. I listen to that track alone over and over. If you want to relax with great opera and no shrieking this is the disc you want. I would pay a lot more than retail price to have this wonderful CD in my collection.
