Gladiator: Music from the Motion Picture Review
Most modern Hollywood films have musical "temp tracks" laid in as they're edited, usually classical standards or music from other soundtracks that helps shape the dramatic and emotional intentions of works in progress. Sometimes these temp tracks become the score (as in "2001"), but more often they serve as a template for the film's eventual scorer. That said, we'll boldly climb out on a limb and opine that director Ridley Scott was listening to a whole lot of Holst's The Planets as he was cobbling together his modern gladiator epic. Credit Hans Zimmer for taking "Mars, the Bringer of War" and hammering its familiar harmonic and rhythmic Sturm und Drang into something serviceably fresh; cohort Lisa Gerrard generally handles the more ethereal, atmospheric passages. As epic in scope as its thematic inspiration (and with enough occasional nods to "authenticity" to make it work), this is nonetheless a work of often surprising nuances, and one that recasts the traditional heroic orchestral score in deliciously dark and ominous tones. Warning: repeated listening may inspire the invasion of neighboring countries. --Jerry McCulley

So very moving

The greatness of Ridley Scott's Gladiator is due in large part to its moving, nuanced, and haunting score by Hans Zimmer. The lush orchestrations, ominous tones, and ultimately resonant sonance of every track make Gladiator one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard. The track "Sorrow" is so very elegiac, whereas the last three tracks have a heavenly, inspiring quality that I have rarely heard in film music. Lisa Gerrard's vocals are like those of a siren's. To say the very least, this is a superb, rousing score. Highly recommended.

I know adding another review on top of the 344 that already exist is sort of superfluous, but if you want to know exactly how much of a genius Hans Zimmer is, turn on Track 13 of this CD and fast-forward to 9 minutes, 15 seconds. It's just too bad you can't hear it on the one-minute link on this page--but then the price of the CD is absolutely worth just that forty-five seconds. It will knock your socks off (make tears come to your eyes, in my case). So will the last track; if you cried at the end of the movie, just listening to the music from it will make you do the same.
Gladiator 928 says below (or above, depending on where this gets posted) that the soundtrack is better than the movie. Ehh... I'm a huge fan of the storyline... but for sure, the movie and the extradiagetic music are a perfect match. The 2000 Oscar for Best Sound was given to this film, but honestly, it deserved Best Original Score. Or at least Wickedest Awesome Brass and String Score Ever.

Ok, ill make the review short, if u like what i wrote u can tell me and i ll give ya some more.

Long story short : I'm a huge music fan, let alone Movie Soundtracks, especially John Barry. (I find John Williams f.i. to be a genius but somewhat bland at times)

Anyways. I came across Holst's the planets and it reminded me of Gladiator just like the review says. So i got me the Gladiator OST and i ve been listening to it ever since, by doing work, reading, playing computer games whatever. That means endless hours of this masterpiece.

It truly is a flawless suite u just CRAVE to listen to over again and again. Gets under your skin too.

My point

a. Obviously is that it's better than the Movie (sorry Mr. Scott). The Soundtrack has more emotions than the movie itself !! U could turn the picture off and still be satisfied with the ride (except for some key scenes). Maybe because the movie isnt as bold as is "Alexander" for instance.

b. If u like this epic soundtrack i recommand you Vangelis' Alexander (from Oliver Stone). The two really should have paired up for this last particular movie making it the greatest soundtrack of all time.

c. IF U LIKE Lisa Gerrard's performance on "Now we are Free" and such. then GO GET "Man on fire" (By ridleys brother Tony Scott), it features quasi the same type of song at the end except it's way better -not to mention this movie is also a masterpiece in the first place-. It will bring you to tears folks. **remember this when u listen to Lisa's work on this one, you will think about my review and thank me forever lol**

Hope there was a lot of useful information in those few lines :)

Anyway remember : This Soundtrack is bigger than the movie
